Kelham Island: inside Sheffield's coolest neighbourhood

Kelham Island has quietly become one of Sheffield's best neighbourhoods for a weekend wander, a former industrial quarter of old steel works, cutlery factories and canal cuts, now home to independent bars, studios and, in among the museum's Victorian machinery, our café.

Start at the museum

Kelham Island Museum tells the story of Sheffield's steel industry properly, the giant River Don Engine (once the most powerful working steam engine in Europe) still runs on selected days, and the recreated Victorian street sets the scene for everything else in the neighbourhood.

Wander the streets around it

Kelham Island Road and the surrounding streets are worth exploring on foot, old factory buildings converted into breweries, independent shops and studios sit alongside the River Don and the Kelham Island cut. It rewards no fixed plan; just walk and see what's open.

Proper brunch in old Sheffield

Our café inside the museum is set among original Victorian ironwork and hanging greenery, a genuinely atmospheric spot for weekend brunch. It gets busy on Saturdays, so aim for an early table if you want to sit down without a wait.

Make a day of it

Pair a museum visit and brunch with a walk along the Five Weirs Walk, which follows the River Don from Kelham Island out towards Meadowhall, flat, well-signed, and a good way to stretch your legs before heading home.
